How to find your ring size: measurements and Spanish size guide
Share
Knowing the correct size is one of the most important steps when buying a ring. Even a small difference can make a piece spin, feel uncomfortable or risk slipping off. The good news is that you can get a useful first estimate at home and then confirm the measurement with a jeweller.
In this guide we explain how to find your ring size, how to measure your finger, the common size equivalents used in Spain and when a professional measurement is recommended.
Quick answer: if you already have a ring that fits well, measure its inside diameter. If not, measure the circumference of your finger without pulling tightly. Always repeat the measurement and treat the result as a guide until it is checked professionally.
What ring size actually means
Ring size relates to the internal measurement of the piece. The ISO 8653 standard uses the inside circumference in millimetres as its reference. An internal circumference of 52 mm therefore corresponds to international size 52.
In Spain, another common numbering system subtracts 40 from that circumference. In this system, 52 mm is approximately a Spanish size 12. Because brands and manufacturers may use different scales, always check whether a chart refers to Spanish size, European size, diameter or circumference.
Before measuring: five details that affect the result
- Measure the correct finger: the same person can have different sizes on each hand and even between corresponding fingers.
- Avoid extreme temperatures: cold can temporarily reduce finger size and heat can increase it.
- Do not measure immediately after exercise: hands may be more swollen.
- Repeat the test: take two or three measurements at different times of day.
- Consider the knuckle: the ring must pass over it and remain stable at the base of the finger.
Temperature, humidity and time of day can all influence the measurement. This is why professional sizing remains the most reliable way to confirm your size.
Method 1: measure a ring that already fits
This is often the most useful home method, provided the reference ring is worn on the same finger and hand.
- Choose a round ring that is not distorted and fits comfortably.
- Place it on a flat surface.
- Using a millimetre ruler or, preferably, a calliper, measure the inside space from one side to the other.
- Do not include the thickness of the metal: you need the inside diameter.
- Compare the result with the conversion table below.
For example, an inside diameter of approximately 16.6 mm corresponds to a circumference of about 52 mm and Spanish size 12.
Note: this method is less accurate if the ring is oval, has an irregular interior or is measured with an imprecise ruler.
Method 2: measure your finger circumference
If you do not have a reference ring, you can get an estimate using a narrow strip of paper. The result is approximate because paper does not reproduce the rigidity and fit of a real ring.
- Cut a narrow, non-stretch strip of paper.
- Wrap it around the widest part of the finger without pressing into the skin.
- Mark the exact point where the ends overlap.
- Lay the paper flat and measure to the mark in millimetres.
- Repeat two or three times and compare the results.
The length is approximately the finger circumference. If it measures around 54 mm, the usual reference is European size 54 or Spanish size 14.
Do not use elastic string or tighten the paper to obtain a smaller number. The ring must pass over the knuckle and remain comfortable throughout the day.
Approximate ring size table for Spain
This table compares commonly used Spanish sizes with internal circumference and diameter. Diameter figures are rounded to one decimal place and should be treated as a guide.
| Spanish size | Inside circumference (mm) | Approx. inside diameter (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 46 | 14.6 |
| 7 | 47 | 15.0 |
| 8 | 48 | 15.3 |
| 9 | 49 | 15.6 |
| 10 | 50 | 15.9 |
| 11 | 51 | 16.2 |
| 12 | 52 | 16.6 |
| 13 | 53 | 16.9 |
| 14 | 54 | 17.2 |
| 15 | 55 | 17.5 |
| 16 | 56 | 17.8 |
| 17 | 57 | 18.1 |
| 18 | 58 | 18.5 |
| 19 | 59 | 18.8 |
| 20 | 60 | 19.1 |
| 21 | 61 | 19.4 |
| 22 | 62 | 19.7 |
| 23 | 63 | 20.1 |
| 24 | 64 | 20.4 |
| 25 | 65 | 20.7 |
| 26 | 66 | 21.0 |
| 27 | 67 | 21.3 |
| 28 | 68 | 21.6 |
| 29 | 69 | 22.0 |
| 30 | 70 | 22.3 |
Example: if the inside diameter is approximately 17.2 mm, the circumference is around 54 mm and the usual reference is Spanish size 14.
Half sizes and intermediate adjustments also exist. If your measurement falls between two values, do not automatically choose the larger or smaller one: profile, width and the shape of your hand can all affect the choice.
What about wide rings?
A wide band often feels tighter than a narrow ring with the same internal measurement because it covers more of the finger. The technical guidance from GIA recommends using specific gauges for rings wider than 4 mm.
If you are choosing wedding rings, confirm the size using a sample with a similar width to the final model. Our guide on how to choose wedding rings in Alicante and Murcia also covers profile, finish, material and personalisation.
Choosing a size when the knuckle is wider
The ring needs to pass over the knuckle with reasonable resistance without being so loose that it spins continuously at the base of the finger. When there is a large difference between the two areas, measuring only the base can be misleading.
In these cases, try several sizes and profiles. A comfort-fit interior can make the ring easier to put on, but it does not replace correct sizing. The fit should be assessed by seeing how the ring goes on, comes off and behaves when you move your hand.
Finding a size for a surprise gift
If you want to keep the gift a surprise, these options can reduce the risk of error:
- Borrow a ring the person wears on the correct finger.
- Trace its inside edge on paper or take the ring directly to a jeweller.
- Ask someone close to them who may know their size.
- Choose a design that allows later resizing if needed.
- Do not rely only on height, weight or clothing size: these cannot predict finger size accurately.
Make sure you know which finger and hand the reference ring is worn on. A ring from the index finger will not reliably indicate the size of the ring finger.
Common mistakes when measuring at home
- Measuring the outside edge instead of the inside diameter.
- Using a photograph without a true scale.
- Pulling paper too tightly around the finger.
- Measuring only once and treating the result as final.
- Ignoring the knuckle.
- Measuring with very cold, hot or swollen hands.
- Using a ring from another finger or the other hand.
- Forgetting that a wide ring may need a different fitting.
- Confusing Spanish sizing with European or other international systems.
When professional sizing is recommended
We recommend confirming your size with a jeweller for a wedding ring, engagement ring, valuable piece, wide design or a ring with stones set all the way around. It is also advisable if your home measurement falls between two sizes or your knuckle is considerably wider than the base of your finger.
Professional sizing uses calibrated gauges and considers the real fit, not just a number. It also lets you compare different widths before ordering.
You can contact Albaladejo Joyeros for a fitting in Pilar de la Horadada and advice before buying or commissioning your ring.
Can a ring be resized later?
Many rings can be resized, but not all designs allow the same amount of adjustment. Metal, thickness, stones, continuous engraving and construction can all limit how much a ring can be enlarged or reduced.
Before buying, ask whether the model can be altered and what resizing range is possible. For special designs, our bespoke jewellery service lets us consider size and structure from the outset. If you already have a ring that does not fit correctly, our jewellery workshop can assess the available options.
Frequently asked questions about ring sizes
Is my ring size the same on both hands?
Not necessarily. The dominant hand and natural differences between fingers can create variations. Always measure the hand on which the ring will be worn.
Is it better to measure in the morning or afternoon?
The most useful approach is to measure several times at a normal temperature and compare the results. Avoid times when the hand is especially cold or swollen.
What should I do if I am between two sizes?
There is no single answer. It depends on the knuckle, width, profile and desired feel. Try both references using a ring similar to the final design.
Is Spanish size 12 the same as European size 52?
This is the usual equivalence: an inside circumference of 52 mm corresponds approximately to Spanish size 12. Always check the system used by each manufacturer.
Can I measure my size with a mobile app?
It can provide an estimate if the screen is correctly calibrated, but small scale differences affect the result. It does not replace measurement with physical tools.
How tight should a ring be?
It should pass over the knuckle with slight resistance, remain stable at the base and come off without pain or excessive pressure. If it causes discomfort, leaves a deep mark or spins constantly, the size should be reviewed.
Confirm your size before choosing the ring
Measuring at home helps narrow down the options, but a piece intended for everyday wear deserves a final check. Width, profile and finger shape can make two rings with the same number feel different.
